New EEC Website Launching Soon

Searching for the perfect part will soon be even easier, with the launch of the EEC website on Wednesday 18th September.

We are launching the new site to provide even more detail about our wide range of applications, and to help educate technicians, factors and suppliers with advice from our technical team.

Committed to providing the highest level of technical advice for the aftermarket, we have integrated our Technical Blog and social media feeds to ensure customers can access advice in the most convenient way possible.

Paul Clark, Managing Director, European Exhaust and Catalyst, comments: "The way in which people want to access our part data and technical advice has dramatically changed in a short space of time. No longer will a product catalogue and simple website suffice."

"As a TecDoc accredited supplier, EEC has always been committed to ensuring the highest quality of data, and customers have appreciated being able to view features such as 3D PDF's and accurate data."

Customers visiting the new site will be able to search by Cross Reference, part numbers, and category selections, and search results will be fed back to the EEC team to enable new product development and improve stock availability.

You can access the new EEC website from 8am on Wednesday 18th September at www.eurocats.co.uk.

Diagnosing Common Catalytic Converter Problems

When diagnosing catalytic converter faults, it is vitally important to use a full 4-gas analyser test, and that technicians don't just use a standard MOT 2-gas test.

Our customers still tell us that the catalytic converter is at fault, by reading the 4 gasses could show a range of faults, one being that there is an air leak between the exhaust manifold and the first lambda sensor.

Watch the following video that was filmed at a garage in Wiltshire showing how to fully diagnose an air leak:

An MOT pass using a 2-gas analyser test would show a CO reading of less than 0.2 and a Hydrocarbon level of less than 200 PPM (parts per million).

But if you used a 4 gas analyser test to check that everything was working correctly, the readings would show a CO level of less than 0.2, Hyrdocarbon levels of less than 15 PPM, a CO2 of 13.5 or greater and O2 levels of less than 0.2.

Misfire?

The other most common fault we hear about through our dedicated technical team is where every now and again, a shot of O2 (air) passes through the catalytic converter caused by a misfire for example.

The vehicle's rear Lambda Sensor will pick up the higher O2 reading and switch on the Engine Management light. When a diagnostics tool is plugged in, it will show the catalytic converter is working below efficiency.

By using a 4-gas analyser test, you can identify the fault.

If the values are correct  (CO < 0.2, CO2 13.5, HC <15PPM and O2 < 0.2), it is an intermittent fault, and not one caused by the catalytic converter.

New tool removes taboo from diesel filters

As published in the December 2012 edition of Aftermarket Magazine:

Many workshops consider diesel particulate filters as troublesome and regard the component as a “main dealer-only product”.

EEC has developed a DPF Reset Tool to helpindependents feel confident in retaining the profitable work. The serviceable item needs to be replaced after an amount of miles specified by each manufacturer –from 75,000 miles for Fords and up to 150,000 for BMWs – and when DPF’s fail, it is usually down to problems upstream of the filter or within the DPF system. This is where a DPF reset tool comes in.

The light goes on
When the DPF light illuminates on the dash, regeneration is needed.

The manufacturers’ handbooks willinstruct you to ‘Drive for 20 minutes at a constant 65mph’ (over 2,500 RPM) or similar.

If this does not instigate a ‘regen’ or the filter fills to over 90%, or 45grams,the DPF needs replacing and this is not covered under warranty. If the coil and engine management light is on with loss of power, limp home mode will engage with a maximum of 3,000 RPM and the fault code will read ‘DPF soot loading too high’ – a forced regeneration is required.

The DPF tool will walk you through the procedures and help identify the route problems.

• Ensure the vehicle is parked outside, is in neutral and the hand brake is on
• The engine should be warm, there should be at least a quarter tank of fuel and no stored fault codes
• If the engine management light comes on first, followed by the DPF light, there’s an issue within the DPF system (i.e temperature, pressure and sensors)

Useful advice
Check the pressure sensors as there could be a build-up of water, also check for damaged pressure pipes and ensure the EGR system is working as it should.

Make sure the vehicle has the correct spec engine oil and the additive is sufficient.

When the DPF filter load reaches a certain level, the ECU activates a regen to increase the DPF temperature to over 550ÂșC and the engine is programmed to inject up to 8 times more fuel per stroke to produce a high amount of NO2, helping to oxidise particulates, increasing the temperature as the exhaust gases pass through the catalytic converter.

It is advisable to check the engine oil for diesel contamination as a result of constant DPF regeneration, if this occurs you must carry out a full oil change and replace the oil filter. The ECU must be readapted when replacing the DPF and when topping up the fuel additive Eolys.
