Fundraising for Breast Cancer Care

The UK's largest manufacturer of aftermarket catalytic converters has been 'going pink' to raise money during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Colleagues at Denmead-based European Exhaust and Catalyst (EEC) have raised £250.00 by spending a day wearing pink clothing, baking and winning home-cooked pink treats in a pink-prize raffle and making donations for the charity Breast Cancer Care.

It was embraced throughout the organisation, including one welder choosing to spray his helmet bright pink for the day whilst manufacturing catalytic converters.

Paul Clark, Managing Director, commented: "It’s important to raise awareness amongst our staff throughout the UK, and to make a positive contribution to an excellent charity. After seeing everyone embrace the spirit of the day, EEC has added to the donations made by staff to ensure we are making a difference."

What is DPF regeneration?

Diesel Particulate Filters act as a soot trap.  In order to prevent the build up of soot deposits that will eventually block the filter and make changes to the running of the vehicle, they must be periodically cleaned out.

This is completed by active or passive regeneration.

Passive regeneration occurs on long continuous journeys where the exhaust temperature gets hot enough so that the soot deposits are consequently burnt off.

For vehicles that do not encounter this type of usage, active regeneration is required to burn off the soot deposits. Active regeneration occurs when the leve of soot deposits in the filter builds up to a maximum pre-determined leve.

At this point the vehicle's ECU makes adjustments to the fuel injection and engine timing in order to increase the exhaust gas temperature.

This increases the temperatures within the DPF unit to a level where the accumulated soot deposits can be burned off. Some vehicles use a fuel additive to aid the regeneration process.

This fluid is added to the fuel tank each time the vehicle is filled with diesel.

Additives are often used on vehicles that do not have the space to locate the DPF closer to the engine where the temperatures will be at their highest.

The additive helps to lower the temperature at which the soot particules trapped in the DPF ignite and burn off, allowing regeneration to take place at a much lower temperature than it would otherwise take place at.

How to read a 4 gas analyser test

Why are the new vehicle emissions regulations getting tougher?

I thought it was to reduce pollution. If it is a genuine commitment for all of the EU governments to reduce pollution, why are the EU MoT emission values so lax? In fact, why are there different regulations throughout the EU?

There are even different regulations within the UK – let’s take Northern Ireland as an example. Their emissions pass regulations are CO less than 3.5% and HC less than 1,200PPM. In England, Scotland and Wales the pass values are CO less than 0.2% and HC less than 200PPM.

The silly thing about this is that if you fail the MoT on emissions in these three countries, you could catch a ferry to Northern Ireland and pass. You can see with their limits, it is virtually impossible to fail!

Also, their MoT certificate is valid all over the UK. In theory there should be a sliding scale of emission values within the MoT, for example, 3 to 5 year old cars, 5 to 10 year old, and over 10 years – with the toughest values for the newer vehicles. In my opinion, this should be a standard test throughout the EU.

False consciousness

Unfortunately, the general public look upon the MoT as a health check and if their car passes the MoT they believe it is in excellent working order. As we know this is not always correct.
If a vehicle only just fails its MoT on emissions, it is possible to replace the catalytic converter which could result in a pass.

This would appear to be the correct diagnosis, yet nine times out of ten it is not! There could be an overriding problem which needs rectifying immediately, otherwise the problem will reappear.

Fitting a new cat which is working at 100% efficiency, will just mask the problem. In time, the new cat will also fail and the chances are it would be detected in another twelve months at the following MoT. The easiest way to pinpoint the fault is to carry out a 4 gas test.

If the values exceed CO <0.2, CO2 >13.5, HC <15PPM, O2 <0.2, and a Lambda of 0.99 to 1.01, there will be a problem. Depending how the values exceed these parameters, will depend on how large the problem is, and by evaluating the 4 gases you can locate and rectify the fault, e.g. CO @ 9.48, CO2 @ 9.10, O2 @ 0.58, HC @ 533PPM, and a Lambda reading of 0.76.

This was a report given to me by a customer of R&J Doncaster. The aforementioned diagnosis points to a failure located at the intake manifold area, due to a lack of air accessing the combustion chamber, thus increasing the HC, which in turn has damaged the cat.

Know your enemy

Hydro Carbons are the greatest enemy of a catalytic converter. If they are greater than 40PPM, they will be damaging the cat, which will result in a deterioration of the coating and, in extreme cases, a meltdown of the monolith.

EEC is committed to an education and training programme within the industry to help technicians understand, evaluate and diagnose emission problems.

The introduction of type approval for catalytic converters has been a great leap forward and has created a more level playing field. We have invested heavily in our own wash coating facility in Denmead, thus ensuring we produce a top quality product for our home and export markets.

Replacing a Catalytic Converter - tips and advice

When you are intending to fit a new catalytic converter to a car, you should always remember to carry out a 4-gas analyser test and analyse the values before removing the old cat.

The 4-gas text must be recorded at 2500 RPM and the cat must have a temperature of over 350c.

The correct exhaust emission values are:
  • CO < 0.2%
  • CO > 13.5%
  • HC > 15PPM
  • ) < 0.2%
  • Lambda 0.97 - 1.01
  • Oil Temperature minimum of 90c
When replacing an old cat, it is essential to examine the complete exhaust system from the manifold to the tail pipe for damage, corrosion or leakage/blowing. Repair or replace as required.

Understanding DPF Regeneration - part 1

Did you know that:

- A new DPF will run for approximately 300-1000 miles before it first regenerates? But after then, it should happen around every 200 miles if the operating conditions require it, and the vehicle is functioning correctly.

- If a DPF is more than 80% blocked within 200 miles, there is almost certainly a problem with another part of the emissions system that caused the filter to originally block and no longer function correctly.

- A new DPF is not a flow through device like a catalytic converter. Exhaust gases pass into the filter and the gases must be able to flow through the internal cell walls in order to exit the filter. The DPF cell walls are porous to allow the gases through and are designed to trap any particulate matter (soot). This matter ends up deposited on the cell walls.

- If the vehicle is parked before regeneration has been completed and this process is repeated over a period of time, the soot deposits built up can reach a level where regeneration is no longer sufficient to clear the blocked filter. The resulting back pressure will cause poor vehicle performance or breakdown.

Tips for fitting a replacement EEC Catalytic Converter

As the experts in the aftermarket automotive industry, EEC is pleased to offer tips for the fitting of all our product range.

When mounting an EEC catalytic converter, please:

1) Do not use sealer or paste as this will invalidate your warranty and could potentially cause damage to the replacement catalytic converter

2) Mount the new EEC catalytic converter, before undertaking final fixing check the converter has adequate space to move without touching the body.

3) Complete a 4 gas test immediately after fitting the EEC replacement cat to assist with location of any emission faults (the new cat will be operating at 100% efficiency at this stage).

 4) Perform a satisfactory road test

 Please note it is illegal to install a non approved catalytic converter on vehicles registered 1st March 2001 onwards.

Checks before fitting a new Diesel Particulate Filter

Before fitting a new Diesel Particulate Filter, you should check the following components on a vehicle:

* EGR valve or EGR pipe blockage
* Oxygen sensors
* DPF pressure pipes and valves
* Air flow meter
* Intake manifold
* Pressure switch
* Engine temperature sensor
* Engine oil - is it the correct specification for the engine?
* Intake manifold
* Turbo charger function
* Engine wear
* Fuel pressure
* Heater / Glow Plugs
* Leaking Injectors
* Blocked sensors
* ECU Malfunction
* Air filter condition

The above are just some general points, but it's recommended that a full service is carried out at the same time as installing a new DPF, and remember that most diesel engines fitted with a DPF require a specific low ash oil.

Some vehicles also require a special additive in the oil at the same time a DPF is replaced, and each vehicle will require an individual diagnostic investigation and testing procedure.

EEC at Mechanex Manchester

If you're visiting Mechanex in Manchester this week, why not pop by and hear our Technical Trainer Stuart Still giving some excellent advice about catalytic converters maintenance and diagnosing emission system issues?

EEC is committed to helping all our stakeholders understand and learn more about our products - if you would benefit from some training for your customers or staff, please get in touch.

Cutting Catalytic Converter Crime

EEC is helping motorists close to one of their major manufacturing facilities improve the security of their vehicles this May.

The UK's largest manufacturer of aftermarket catalytic converters is working with South Derbyshire Police to help reduce the rate of catalytic converter thefts in the county, with a special action day taking place on Thursday 17th May.

Residents and businesses are invited to visit EEC between 9am and 1pm to decrease their chances of becoming a victim of crime, and see what products are available to protect their means of travel.

European Exhaust and Catalyst will be offering vans and 4x4 vehicles the chance to security mark their catalytic converters to make them more easily identifiable to local scrap merchants, where thieves commonly sell the metals after they have been stolen.

Officers from the local North West Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team will be present in a mobile police station, alongside various companies specialising in vehicle crime.

Paul Clark, Managing Director, EEC, comments: "Catalytic converter theft is a major problem across the UK, and as a major manufacturer of these products, it's our duty to help support our customers and reduce the level of vehicle crime in our local community."

The event comes after over 40 catalytic converters were stolen in just two weeks during April in South Derbyshire, with an increasing number likely due to the continued high value of scrap metal.

Chris Smith, Communities Manager from Safer South Derbyshire Partnership, comments: "Due to the high scrap value of catalytic converters, more and more are being taken and it is usually from 4x4's and vans as they are easier to get underneath than standard cars. If you do have a van or 4x4 please think about where you are parking it and if at all possible keep it locked in a garage."

"This is another good example of partner agencies and local businesses like European Exhaust and Catalyst coming together to make South Derbyshire an even safer place to live, work and visit.”

You can get more information about the day by calling the Safer South Derbyshire Partnership on 01283 595 924, and more about EEC by visiting www.eurocats.co.uk.

What killed the cat?

Although folklore may claim the feline variety has 9 lives, the vehicle ‘cat’ certainly does not. In this article published in May's PMM magazine, our Technical Trainer Stuart Still explains why a comprehensive diagnostic routine should be undertaken before condemning emissions components.

A great deal of my time is spent fault finding and diagnosing emission faults, some of which potentially could result in a damaged catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter (DPF), even though the faulty component was unrelated and would not normally be associated with a damaged cat.

Locate possible faults
One of the most effective emissions diagnostic tools is the four-gas analyser, and by understanding and reading the four gas values correctly, it enables you to locate and rectify many possible faults. Some of these failed components (especially the ignition-related ones in turn) could have inadvertently damaged the catalytic converter.

Even though you may not initially have identified the link, these issues can often be interpreted as an ineffective cat. It is extremely important that when a faulty component has been located, repaired or replaced, that you check that damage has not been caused to any other related component.

To enforce this scenario, I was recently contacted by a customer who explained that the Saab 9.5 he was working on had failed its MOT due to the emissions. He diagnosed that the problem was with the cat, as it was way below its threshold.

The four-gas values backed this up with readings of:

 CO = 1.2%, CO2 = 14.3%, HC = 79PPM, O2 = 1.2% and Lambda = 1.04

These are typical values of a damaged cat that is not working efficiently. He could not understand this as the car belonged to one of his loyal customers, which is serviced regularly with him. He had also replaced the catalytic converter just five months previously; this was due to external impact damage, which caused the monolith to collapse.

Original problem
He was so convinced it was the cat, that he agreed for me to visit him the following day to assist him with his diagnosis. This would give me an opportunity to give the car a once over before he replaced the cat. It is extremely unusual for a cat to fail within a two year period.

The ones that do fail are usually associated with an emissions failure or a related faulty component – EGR valve, air mass meter, injectors etc.

 Arrangements were made for me to visit the garage and examine the Saab. I had recently talked to two major auto electrical manufacturers that explained the UK market for coil packs is immense so the first thing I checked was the coil pack, knowing that they are a constant problem on the 9.5 model.

My concerns were correct, as a new coil pack had been fitted – the invoice in the service book showed that it had been fitted three months ago, backing up my theory. He agreed that this could have been the source of the problem. We replaced the damaged cat, followed up by a four-gas emissions test.

The results were perfect: CO = <0.20, CO2 = >13.5, HC = <15PPM, O2 = <0.20 and Lambda = 1

I explained that the damaged cat was a direct result of the failed coil pack, and that it was good practice to carry out a four-gas emissions test directly after replacing any failed ignition component, especially coil packs. There is an opportunity for us all to be more effective when repairing customer’s vehicles, by reporting possible damaged related components as a consequence of the original problem.

Carrying out this practice will not only reduce catalytic converter problems, it will also help with continued customer satisfaction, by being proactive, thorough and conscientious. I am convinced that failed coil packs are resulting in a large number of cat warranties.

To help reduce this industry problem, we have compiled a warning flyer advising that an emissions test is done after replacing a coil pack or ignition-related components.

DPF Removal

It's important to understand that the removal of Diesel Particulate Filters is not a simple operation and can cause problems, especially with newer vehicles.

Many manufacturers now add additional patches and codes placed inside the ECU in order for the DPF to regenerate more often.

Trying to remove all of these codes and patches is no simple task, as the additional codes are located elsewhere in the ECU.

Vehicle owners are experiencing problems with the DPF removal ECU software, and although initially the software would seem to work, around 100 miles later, the DPF light would return.

This causes the vehicle to try and regenerate, which often places it into "limp-home" mode, and reduce the engine power. Be warned, this will cause damage to engines!

DPF's - The Aftermarket opportunity at Mechanex

Visitors to the regional Mechanex Trade Show in Manchester will be learning about the aftermarket opportunities for Diesel Particulate Filters from EEC.

Our Technical Trainer Stuart Still, will be hosting a seminar that provides advice for garages and mechanics wishing to understand and create a competitive advantage by offering a more comprehensive service to their customers.

Stuart says: "Diagnosing DPF faults is often viewed as a main-dealer only procedure and the independent garage sector is missing out on an important sales and profit opportunity. Given that DPF's were fitted to some cars in the late 1990's, these vehicles are firmly within the aftermarket sector and it's important to understand where we can help consumers."

EEC will also be exhibiting at the Exeter Mechanex show for motor professionals between Tuesday 17th April and Wednesday 18th April.

Held at the Westpoint Arena, we will have a special offer on our new EEC DPF Reset Tool - a unique hand-held specialised diagnostics tool which allows you to regenerate Diesel Particulate Filters.

The Manchester event takes place on Tuesday 22nd May and Wednesday 23rd May at Event City in Trafford Park.

You can find out more about the EEC range of DPF's by clicking here, and watch a video of the EEC DPF Reset Tool by clicking here.

EEC one of the first to Join Campaign to Create 2012 Jobs for Young People in 2012

As posted on various newspaper websites in the Hampshire area:

A specialist exhaust business in Portsmouth has stood up and been counted as one of the first in the UK to join forces with a national training organisation which has committed to creating 2012 new jobs for young people in 2012.

European Exhaust & Catalyst Limited (EEC), based in Portsmouth, has signed up to Aspire Achieve Advance Group Limited's (3AAA) 2012|2012 challenge. 3AAA runs the National IT Partnership (NITP) academy at Highbury College in Portsmouth. Eighteen year old Tim Green from Portsmouth has been employed by EEC as an NITP apprentice, working at the company whilst studying at Highbury College.

Paul Clark, Managing Director, European Exhaust & Catalyst Limited, says: "We are committed to developing the skills of our staff and are delighted to have the opportunity to take on a new employee through the apprenticeship scheme. Young people need all the help they can get in these challenging times and organisations such as 3AAA are taking the lead. It is up to companies like ours to provide the opportunities for young people to gain real skills and make a valuable contribution to the wide economy."

Di McEvoy-Robinson, Director, 3AAA, said: "With the government's announcement that the unemployment rate in the 16-24 year-old age group is running at a record high of 22.3%, it's essential that organisations such as ours step up and take responsibility for creating new jobs for young people.

"We are combining our experience and expertise in delivering high quality Apprenticeships, with our skills in sourcing capable young people to meet the recruitment requirements of our employer partners. We are creating completely new jobs that give young people a real future and employers a competent new member of their workforce equipped with up-to-date skills for the job.

"This is also our call to employers across the UK to help us realise our commitment of creating 2012 jobs in 2012 to make a real difference to the lives of young people all over the country."

NITP academies provide apprentices with industry recognised IT qualifications, underpinned with the practical and valuable experience secured via employment as an apprentice.

3AAA's 2012|2012 pledge kicks off with a series of employer events in Portsmouth designed to get local businesses to commit to creating new jobs for local school leavers. 3AAA's campaign will run throughout 2012. Each region will be in competition to create the highest number of new jobs, with the top achieving region to be recognised at an awards celebration at the end of the year.

3AAA works in partnership with local colleges across the UK to deliver local solutions for young people, employers and adults learning in the workplace. NITP academies are located in Walsall, Tamworth, Bedford, Letchworth, St Albans, Enfield, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Milton Keynes, Oxford and Birmingham.

Why do you need our EEC DPF Reset Tool?

As published in February 2012 PMM Magazine.

How and why Diesel Particulate Filters fail and the procedures involved with diagnosis and rectifying faults has led to many garage technicians suffering ‘head-scratching’ moments.

Fear not though, as European Exhaust & Catalyst (EEC) has just brought a fantastic new solution to market. Stuart Still, Technical Trainer, tells us more….

Last year, on my visits to various customers, I made enquiries about the general demand for Diesel Particulate Filters. I was staggered at the lack of DPF knowledge, especially the procedure regarding installation, encountering answers such as: “We regard it as a main dealer product” or: “We need specialist diagnostic tools”.

EEC subsequently decided to eliminate one of these major objections. We contacted a diagnostic tool company and discussed the opportunity of becoming our partners in a venture to create a specialised hand-held DPF diagnostic tool.

After many months of hard work collating all of the data required to deliver an easy-to-use, hand-held solution, the EEC DPF Reset Tool was born.

Why would you need one?

The DPF is a filter that removes particulates and soot/carbon from the exhaust gases and is a serviceable item that needs to be replaced at the end if its life.

This varies with each vehicle manufacture (for example Ford requires replacement at 75K and BMW at 150K) and main dealers account for the majority of DPFs fitted within our market.

The OE manufacturer warranty does not cover ‘over-filling’, as this is regarded in the same way as oil, fuel or air filters – the warranty only covers mechanical failure.

As such, the aftermarket is missing out on an opportunity to increase their sales and profit margin because DPFs are a high ticket product.

There does however seem to be some confusion as to why a DPF could over-fill and how to diagnose faults. It is extremely unusual that a DPF will fail on its own (the problems are usually upstream or to do with the actual system) so this is where the EEC DPF tool becomes a necessity.

Diagnosis sequence

The majority of vehicle manufacturers have the same warning light sequence but you should always check the vehicle handbook to be safe.

The sequence generally consists of the following steps:

a) If the DPF light comes on this means ‘regeneration’ is needed.

b) Once again, read the handbook for instructions. For example ‘Drive for 20 minutes at a constant speed of 65mph’.

c) If the DPF is not regenerated at this stage and fills to over 90% or 45g, the DPF will need replacing. This is not covered under warranty.

d) If the coil and engine management light is on with loss of power, ‘limp home mode’ will engage with a maximum of 3000 RPM. The fault code will read: ‘DPF soot loading too high’. ‘Forced regeneration’ is now required.

Performing a ‘forced regeneration’

Step-by-step instructions are included with the EEC DPF diagnostic tool, but in basic terms, to carry out a forced DPF regeneration you need to:

a) Ensure the vehicle is parked outside in park/neutral, the hand brake is on, engine warm, with at least a quarter tank of fuel, and check there are no fault codes stored.

b) If the engine management light comes on first, followed by the DPF light, it indicates an issue within the DPF system, for example
temperature, pressure, sensors etc. Use the EEC DPF tool to identify this.

Useful checks and advice

1. Check pressure sensors as there could be a
build up of water;

2. Examine pressure pipes for damage. They
must be clean or they could freeze in extreme
temperatures due to water build up;

3. Check that the EGR system is working
correctly;

4. Check that the vehicle has the correct
specification engine oil;

5. Check the Eolys/Cerine additive (active
system);

6. When the DPF filter load reaches a predetermined level, the ECU activates a regeneration process to increase the DPF temperature to over 550˚C.

The engine is set to run in a certain specific way and can inject up to eight times more fuel per stroke to produce a high amount of NO2, which will help oxidize the particulates, increasing the temperature as the exhaust gases pass through the catalytic converter;

7. It is advisable to check the oil for diesel contamination as a result of constant DPF regeneration. If this occurs you must carry out a full oil change and replace the oil filter;

8. The ECU must be readapted when replacing the DPF and when topping up the
Eolys fuel additive.

The DPF will not regenerate if:
■ The engine management light is on for any
fault;

■ There is a faulty EGR valve;

■ There is less than 20 litres of fuel in the fuel tank, if the fuel light is on or the engine management light is illuminated.

Please note: Data and procedures may vary between manufactures.

Tips on Performing a DPF Regeneration

Before performing a Diesel Particulate Filter regeneration, you should always:

* Check pressure sensors as there could be a build up of water.

* Examine pressure pipes for damage. They must be clean or they could freeze in extreme temperatures due to water build up.

* Check that the EGR system is working correctly.

* Check that the vehicle has the correct specification engine oil.

* Check the Eolys/Cerine additive (active system).

* When the DPF filter load reaches a pre-determined level, the ECU activates a regeneration process to increase the DPF temperature to over 550degC. The engine is set to run in a certain specific way and can inject up to eight times more fuel per stroke to produce a high amount of NO2, which will help oxidize the particulates, increasing the temperature as the exhaust gases pass through the catalytic converter.

* It is advisable to check the oil for diesel contamination as a result of constant DPF regeneration. If this occurs you must carry out a full oil change and replace the oil filter.

* The ECU must be readapted when replacing the DPF and when topping up the Eolys fuel additive.
